DIY Wire wrap Pendant

Today we are going to use a piece of agate to make a pendant. This assembling scheme can be used for stones of any shape. The stone has a hole, which makes it much easier to fasten the agate when making the jewelry.

We are going to use my favorite copper wire. The wire should be natural. You and I will make balls on the ends of the copper wire. The spray wire will not work for this. Natural silver, copper, brass, bronze, nickel silver, and German silver of suitable thickness will be perfect.

I used 1mm thick wire for the base and 0.4mm thick wire for the weaving. If you have a small stone you can use 0.8 mm thick wire for the base and 0.3 mm for the weaving.

Make sure beforehand that the base wire can go through the hole in the stone.
In this Diy wire wrap Pendant tutorial, we will need a small set of hand tools.

To make balls on the ends of the wire, we will need any gas torch burner with a combustion temperature of at least 1300 degrees Celsius. If the combustion temperature is lower, the wire will not melt and the ball will not be formed. You will also need a grinding tool for processing the copper balls.

We need three pieces of 1 mm thick wire about 30-40 cm each. And as you understand yourself, we will use an unlimited amount of 0.4 mm thick wire for weaving.
Bend the wire approximately in the middle and make the shape of the stone. The angle of my stone is rather sharp, it looks like a triangle. You can have an oval, it does not really matter. If you want to make a Diy wire wrap Pendant, use what you have.

Take a long section of 0.4 mm wire in the middle and start weaving the three main wires. I made different weavings on one side and on the other.

In the process of weaving, we should bend the weaving to the shape of the stone. I usually bend the wire with my hands. You can use pliers with silicone tips so as not to damage the weaving.

When you get close to the hole in the stone, bend one wire.

Thread the wire through the hole in the stone.

Now bend the wire over the stone and weave it into the weaving. There will be a weaving of two main wires on one side and four on the other side.

Bend the weavings to the shape of the stone, so that the weavings overlap with each other.

From the weaving of four wires, we will then make a loop for a cord or chain. We will bend a weaving of two wires around it.

First, we need to try on where we will have the ends of the wire with the balls. Have you tried it on? Cut off the extra wire and get ready to make the balls.
In the video below, I am showing how I make the balls for this particular ornament.
Bend the wire (one end first) as far away from the stone as possible. Make a ball on one wire, then on the other. This is how we make Diy wire wrap Pendant even more beautiful.

For safety, hold the wire with tweezers or pliers. Be extremely careful and cautious when working with an open flame! Prepare some water to cool the wire.

Either way, the balls do not come out perfect. Use a sanding tool to sand the balls and the wire.
You can make balls on all ends of the wire at once. But you have to understand how long the wire should be. From the lesson below, you will understand the sizes I am talking about.

You can bend the weaving beforehand, try it on, unbend it at least halfway, make balls and make a loop again.

Divide the weaving into two pairs, continue weaving. In the process of weaving, fasten one wire to the ball on the front side of the pendant.

Continue weaving. Bend the ends of the wire – one end with the ball on the front side, the other on the back side. Connect them together with a thin wire.

Do the same with the second pair of wires.

The pendant is ready. Examine the pendant and remove all the flaws.
I like to patinate copper and polish it. After patination and polishing, the weaving looks much more impressive. And the entire piece of jewelry as a whole looks much more beautiful in my opinion.
You can buy special solutions in stores for patinating copper. Be sure to read the instructions for the solutions.
I often use ammonia for patination. In our country, ammonia is freely sold in pharmacies. I pour the solution into a jar and hang the jewelry over the solution. Copper is patinated in the ammonia vapor.

When the copper gets the color I want, I take the pendant out of the jar.

Next, I proceed to polish the copper. If you have a natural volcanic stone, you may not be scared that you will ruin the stone when polishing it. Volcanic stones are hard enough. I always recommend using only such stones. You can also use glass – don’t worry.
For polishing, I use a grinder with special felt tips. Felt circles are small in size, so it is more convenient to work with small details.

I use polishing pastes that you can buy in the store.
After polishing, I thoroughly wash the entire piece with soap and a small brush.
Over time, the natural copper will darken. You will sometimes have to refresh the jewelry (polish again). To prevent this from happening, copper can be coated with a special colorless varnish.
