Wire is a solid and pliable material, it takes any shape. The unique properties of thin metal wire were successfully used by ancient jewelers, who were making magnificent patterns, creating jewelry of amazing beauty.

The unusual jewelry made of copper, bronze or brass wire can take a variety of forms. For example, you can make original hair jewelry, rings and bracelets, openwork necklaces or pendants. Beginners should not worry about lack of practice and experience in creative work because simple and detailed instructions on Valeriy’s website will help in creating a unique collection of luxury jewelry. Today I will show a free wire wrapped pendant tutorial.

The most common wire weaving involves the use of copper wire, which has a beautiful appearance and color. In my Free wire wrapped pendant tutorials I usually use copper wire.

In addition, brass, steel, silver and aluminum wire can be used in crafts. Besides, it is possible to find wire with an additional coating (an alloy of other metals), which allows you to change its color.

An important characteristic of any wire is its diameter. I normally use 1mm thick wire for the base and 0.4mm for the weaving. You can use 0.8 mm wire for the base and 0.3 mm for the weaving.

The main principle of this technique is to use thick wire for the base and thinner and more flexible wire for weaving.
Unusual hair ornaments, rings and bracelets, necklaces or pendants with graceful curls – you can use and make everything that your imagination prompts. Thus, you are able to create with your own hands absolutely anything and it won’t be that expensive. This hobby can be your life’s work, or it can be your way of making pretty accessories to your jewelry collection.

We will use copper wire 1 mm thick for the base and 0.4 mm for the weaving. I usually take a longer piece of wire than I need. Copper wire is inexpensive so it won’t be a problem to cut off big leftovers. On the other hand, imagine not having enough wire to complete hours of work. What will you choose? I prefer to play it safe. Besides, leftover wire can then be used for other work.

I usually take about 50 cm of thick wire for the base. We will need five pieces. Why so many? Because my stone is quite thick.
Let me explain. The weaving will go around the edge of the cabochon. The bottom one wire will hold the cabochon from falling out. The top one wire will hold the stone from the front side.

So the braid must be wider than the thickness of the cabochon.

For your cabochon, the number of wires may be different. Measure the thickness of the cabochon and the width of your weaving beforehand. But first, review this free wire wrapped pendant tutorial carefully.

We need to measure the circumference of the cabochon as well. You can do this with a strip of paper. Make marks on the paper. This will be our measure of the length of the weaving to attach the cabochon.

This is the length we need to weave all the wires together (approximately in the middle). The loose wires at the top and bottom will serve to secure the cabochon.

Next comes the hard, but very responsible work. Bend the weaving around the cabochon.

Note, it is good if the weaving bends slightly at an angle, according to the shape of the cabochon. If you can do that, you won’t even have to bend the top wire to secure the cabochon from the front side. In my photo, the cabochon doesn’t fall out.

Next, sew together the two weavings at the top of the cabochon.

On the back side insert the cabochon and fasten it. Bend the wire as shown in the photo.

Place the two wires forward and weave them together with the front pair of wires. From this weaving of four wires, we will then make a loop for the chain.

The rest of the wire should be divided into pairs and weaved any way of weaving.

The main work is done. The cabochon is nicely fixed with wire. Next, we will decorate our pendant. From now on, you can curve the wire nicely to your liking. It is not necessary to follow my design.
Meanwhile, I will continue.

Cut off the excess wire with wire cutters and hide it under the weaving on the inside of the pendant.

Next, we need to make a loop for the chain. It is better to bend it through a round pencil.

Bend, cut off the excess wire and hide the ends of the wires. If necessary, sew the weaving with thin wire while weaving.

I like to patinate copper wire and then polish it. To prevent the wire from darkening over time, it can be coated with a special varnish.
Finally, add a chain or cord.
