Pendant wire wrapping tutorial. Copper wire and stone cabochon.

To make the pendant, I will use natural copper wire. 1 mm thick for the base and 0.4 mm thick copper wire for the weaving. Copper wire is the most common and affordable option, so it’s great for beginners.

In my Pendant wire wrapping tutorial, I use copper wire. This does not mean that you have to use copper wire. You can use any wire you like. I have made similar jewelry with copper wire, nickel silver wire, brass, bronze and sterling silver. You can also combine, use two, three kinds of wire in one piece of jewelry.

I have only one recommendation for you. Always use the right thickness of wire. In this tutorial, I am making the pendant from 1mm (18 ga) and 0.4mm (26 ga) thick wire. You can use 0.8mm (20 ga) wire for the base and 0.3mm (28 ga) for weaving.

For better demonstration, I took a large 30mm by 40mm cabochon from Tiger Eye stone to make it easier for you to see every detail. I also fastened cabochons of smaller sizes in the same way. For your jewelry, you can take a cabochon of any size.

Tools for creating a pendant of wire and cabochon.

wire wrapped tools

We will not need many tools to make this pendant. A small standard set of hand tools that are usually used to work with wire will be enough. In every Pendant wire wrapping tutorial, I recommend that everyone should buy and use pliers with silicone tips (rubber tip pliers).

We need five pieces of 1 mm thick copper wire about 50 cm each.

First, measure the cabochon with a thin strip of paper and make marks with a felt-tip pen. Mark the places where the stone fasteners will be located. They will look like a prong (claw).

Take one of the 1 mm thick wires and approximately in the middle (according to the marks on the strip of paper) make claws to attach the cabochon. These are the fasteners I’ve been talking about a moment ago. This is my secret technique in today’s Pendant wire wrapping tutorial.

The size of the claws depends on the size of your cabochon. Usually, 5-7 mm is enough for a secure attachment.
Weave all the wires together. Use any method of weaving. If you want to learn the wire weaving technique – check out my free tutorial!

Put the frame on a flat surface. Place the cabochon in the frame and remember approximately how far you need to bend the prongs to make the cabochon fit tightly in the frame. Remove the cabochon and bend the prongs with pliers.

On the back side of the weaved wire, we will clamp the cabochon so it doesn’t fall back out. Don’t forget to set the cabochon.

I patinated the copper wire in ammonia vapor. I hung the pendant over a solution of ammonia in a glass jar.

After the wire darkens, you need to take the pendant out of the jar and polish it.

The copper wire will darken over time. To prevent this from happening, the entire jewelry can be coated with a special colorless varnish. So, this is the end of my Pendant wire wrapping tutorial – hope you enjoyed it.
