The simple way to wrap large stones without holes.
A pendant made of the copper wire using an ammonite. Ideas.
I would like to present you an idea of a reliable way of fastening the ammonite with the copper wire. We use natural ammonite. It is sawn in half. You should work with ammonite very carefully. Ammonite is very fragile, especially its thin edges.
We are going to work with natural copper wire, the thickness is 1 mm and 0,4 mm.
We will need a small set of tools for work.
Use Flat nose pliers with plastic/nylon jaws to clamp the weaving wire.
The simple way to wrap large stones without holes.
Take a piece of wire. It should be 1 mm thick and approximately 50 cm long.
I can’t tell you a certain size. Everything is learned in practice.
Bend a piece of wire in the middle of it. The shape and size should be a bit smaller than the stone’s ones. You should think about the fastening point in advance. Bend the piece of wire just like as it is shown in the photo. You will probably fail to do it with a first try. Just try to do it once again.
Finally, you should get something like this. Don’t bend the wire when the stone is already inside it. Bend it with pliers before that.
If you do it the right way, the fastening of the ammonite will be very durable.
Next, start to weave two ends of thin wire. You can use any weaving technique.
You can make a usual loop for a cord or a chain. Or you can unleash your imagination and make something like what I’ve made.
The most important thing for me is to fasten the stone without making a hole. The decoration is a second matter thing. All patterns are born in my head by themselves. I can’t tell in advance, how the jewelry will end up looking like. But the fastening is a different thing. I thoroughly plan it beforehand.
Afterwards, I patinate and polish copper wire. It will make it look more antique and ancient.
Work with ammonite very carefully. If you patinate copper wire, you should do it with a brush. Apply the solution only on wire’s surface.
When you start to polish wire, cover the ammonite with a dense piece of paper. Or you can use something like this. We do it in order to prevent the ammonite from damaging.
The natural copper wire gets dark over time. In order to prevent this process, we should apply varnish on the wire. I cover the whole piece of the jewelry, including both stone and wire. I simply dip it in the varnish.
You can use this fastening type with differently shaped stones. I used wire which thickness is 1 mm and 0,4 mm. If you want, you can decorate the pendant with all sorts of weaving patterns.
