Wire for making a DIY Tree of Life pendant.

We will use copper wire of medium hardness with a thickness of 1 – 1.5 mm. This one will be used for the frame. We will make the tree of soft copper wire 0.4 mm thick. When I use small cabochons I use 0.3 mm wire.
I will use a natural stone cabochon of oval shape 30×40 mm.

Tools for making the Tree of Life pendant with your own hands.

We will need a small set of hand tools.
Round nose pliers – we will use them for shaping and bending wire
Side cutters – they are necessary for cutting wire
Snipe nose pliers (sometimes I call them chain nose pliers) – these are great pliers that will be useful almost for everything, they are good for shaping and also, they are convenient when you work with places that are hard to reach.
Flat nose pliers – we will use them in order to create sharp corners in the wire – they are indispensable for this.

I would recommend you use silicone-tipped pliers. You can’t find anything more convenient when it comes to wire weaving.

Nylon jaw chain nose pliers are a very useful tool for anyone who does a lot of wire working.

Bend the wire around the cabochon. The frame should be slightly larger than the cabochon. A thin wire should pass freely between the edge of the cabochon and the frame.

Weave the two wires in any way you want.

So that the stone does fall out of the frame, we make a support for the cabochon on the back side. It is not necessary to repeat the patterns I made. The main thing is not to let the cabochon fall out.

Weave thin branches after that. You can do this without a cabochon. But from time to time try the cabochon in the stone holder. It should perfectly fit in its place.

To secure the cabochon, we attach the thin wire to the frame. First do it at the top and sides of the cabochon.

Just push the wire between the frame and the cabochon. Make three or four turns after that. Then cut the wire.

The Tree of Life pendant is almost ready.

Handmade jewelry

I like to patinate copper wire and then polish it. You can patinate the wire with special solutions.

Handmade jewelry

I polish the piece of jewelry using felt mugs with polishing pastes. I also use a grinder.

Handmade jewelry

Copper darkens over time. In order to prevent this, you can coat the wire with a special colorless varnish.
