Wire wrapping techniques – Wire.

nickel silver wire

In today’s tutorial, I am going to use nickel silver wire. But you don’t have to use nickel silver wire like me. In fact, you can use any wire. I have been making the same ornaments using different metals. For example, I have been using copper wire, wire from nickel silver, brass, bronze and sterling silver. So, you can choose metal you feel comfortable to work with. You can even combine different types of wires in one work. You can use two or even three types of wires.
But I have a certain recommendation for you. You should choose wire thickness carefully. And you should use only one wire thickness. As for me, I make pendants using wire 1 mm (18 ga) and 0.4 mm (26 ga) thick. But if you don’t feel comfortable to work with it, use wire with a thickness of 0.8 mm (20 ga) and 0.3 mm (28 ga). Both wire thicknesses will be okay.

Wire wrapping techniques – First, let’s talk about Instruments.

As always, you need a certain set of hand tools to make today’s decoration. I don’t want to waste time talking about boring details. The set of tools is ordinary – so if you have already worked with wire – you don’t need any explanation. You experience will help you.

Use Flat nose pliers with plastic/nylon jaws to clamp the weaving wire.

Nylon jaw chain nose pliers are a very useful tool for anyone who does a lot of wire working.

Wire wrapping techniques – Next, let’s talk about stones.

We are going to use cabochon made of natural stones. You can use any size – small or large, it doesn’t really matter. But I want to notice, that it is better to use stones of volcanic origin.
As you may have already guessed, after you saw the photo – today we will use a large labradorite stone. It’s really thick. Just like a pebble by the seashore. But how to attach it using wire? Today I will show you how to make the Tree of Life pendant using a large stone.

Wire wrapped pendant tutorial, let’s begin.

First, we need to attach the stone with wire. Take a wire 1mm thick and about 50cm long. Bend it in half and shape it according to your stone’s shape (as in the photo above).
Next, we will attach the stone using a Viking loop. The attachment will become tighter after that. The loop looks like knitting. Perhaps it is wrong to call it knitting. But this loop is very similar to the loop that Vikings used to knit their necklaces and bracelets.

I am using wire 0.4mm thick.

This technique is pretty complicated. It is used for attaching stones. It is very difficult to master it with a first try. So, be patient. Don’t worry, it will work out after a while. You just need more practice. There is a video tutorial below, just at the end of the post.

The tree will be made of wire 0.4 mm thick. You need 10 – 12 pieces of wire. They should be about 20 – 25 cm long.

First, we need to make the trunk. And we will make thick and thin branches after that.

Next, place the ends of the wire under the braid on the backside. Then, attach it to the main thick wire.

The stone is thick. So, I decided to decorate the side of the pendant with a pretty braid.

Next, we will work with the upper part of the pendant. You can make the loop for the cord using any technique you want. But I have a piece of very important advice for you. Right at the end of the assembly, don’t forget to hide the wire ends somewhere near the wires. It should be necessarily done. Otherwise, the ends will scratch the skin and damage the clothes.

I usually make my jewelry of natural wire. I like to patinate the wire, then polish it.
While patination I use special solutions. I buy them in the store. For polishing, I use grinding machines with felt circles. Also, I use special polishing pastes.
Sometimes, I cover the entire decoration with a special varnish. It will prevent the wire from darkening over time.
