The wire is, of course, one of the most important supplies when it comes to making wire-wrapped jewelry. It comes in various materials, gauges and strengths, and choosing what you need can be a bit overwhelming. Copper wire is the most common and affordable option, so it is perfect for beginners.
Use appropriate wire thickness. I make jewelry of wire 1 mm (18 ga) wire for the frames and 0.4 mm (26 ga) thick wire for the weaving.
You’ll Need Jewelry Making Pliers.
1) Flat Nose Pliers
2) Wire Cutters
3) Optional Round Nose Pliers
Tools can and should be altered. The edges of pliers are often rough and sharp use 220 emery on a stick to smooth and slightly round all edges.
Use Flat nose pliers with plastic/nylon jaws to clamp the weaving wire.
Wire wrapped jewelry. Wire wrapped pendant tutorial. Gas burner for making spheres at the ends of the wire.
For all jewelry, I make spheres at the ends of the wire. You’ll need a gas burner to make balloons. I use the most available one. I bought it at the store with a gas cylinder
Look at this video of me making a sphere at the end of a natural copper wire. The balls can be made in advance on the pieces of wire. Or you can do it while making jewelry.
The spheres must be sanded. Clean out the soot and remove the heat and shells after annealing
Pendant (bead) made of stone with a hole.
In order to make a pendant at home we will need three pieces of wire, the thickness is 1 mm. Two of them should be about 10 cm long and one of them – around 20 cm. You can see other pieces of wire on my photo, do not pay attention to them. I wanted to make another jewelry but then changed my mind. So, these pieces are irrelevant. You have three pieces, at two of them yous should make spheres in advance.
Let’s insert the long wire piece into the bead’s hole, then you should bend it as it is shown on the photo.
Take those two wire pieces with the spheres at the ends and weave it with the first wire piece. You can temporarily remove the bead for these steps. It will be more comfortable like this.
Our next step is to weave all four pieces together (one piece is folded in half, so there are four pieces in total). You can choose the weaving method yourself. There are lots of them. You can find some of them on my YouTube channel. I have even made a special playlist for them “Different weaving methods for wire wrapped jewelry“. As an example, you can check out the video below.
Let’s make an eyelet for a cord.
You can eyeball it and cut the extras off.
Spread the ends in different sides. Then take a gas burner and carefully make spheres at the ends of the wires. You should keep in mind that wire will become 1-2 mm shorter. And the most important – observe the safety precautions. And don’t forget to sand and polish the wire and the spheres.
Copper wire after annealing becomes soft. So it will be so easy to bend it. Next let’s weave everything together.
Then we move to patinating, sanding and polishing. In order to prevent a copper wire from darkening, you can varnish it.
