History of the use of wire

People began to use wire as a material for the creation of necessary household items in 3,000 B.C. Archeologists have established that in Sumer (about 2,600 B.C.) wire was used to make women’s hair ornaments. They looked like gold and silver ribbons.

Over time, people began to use wire to make chain mail, candlesticks, brushes for scratching horses and other things. And later making wire wrapped pendants became popular.

But where did craftsmen get the right wire for such products?

Initially, it was made in a rather labor-intensive way: they cut sheets of metal into thin strips, then twisted them together and rolled them between two flat sheets.

The second way of making it was winding thin metal strips on a round-shaped core. Today, however, it is produced by pulling it through special conical shapes, which is why the method of production is called pulling or dragging.

Characteristics of wire for making jewelry.

Copper wire jewelry making

The most common wire weaving involves the use of copper wire, which has a beautiful appearance and color. Brass, steel, silver and aluminum wire can also be used. In addition, the wire can be found with an additional coating (alloys of other metals), which allows you to change its color. Copper wire is often used in making wire wrapped pendants.

An important characteristic of any wire is its diameter. In the jewelry making and making wire wrapped pendants particularly craftsmen use wire with a diameter ranging from 0, 2 to 2.0 mm or more.

Even though these days there are a large number of special devices and attachments, working with wire can hardly be called simple. After all, in order to create the simplest decorations, a craftsman must have at least a small set of hand tools. So, if you are interested in making wire wrapped pendants, you need to be patient.
